NewSTART Treaty Threatened By GOP Missile Protection Spin
Missile security is generally something enemies fight over. But Senate Republicans have decided to use missile protection to undermine the national security of their own nation as long as it keeps the administration from achieving a key objective. In this case it's the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty signed by President Obama and Russian President Dimitri Medvedev in April.
NewSTART and U.S./Russian relationships
Many Republicans are using the NewSTART treaty which relies on missile protection for making for fun politics even though it was supported until this week. The Obama administration trying to improve national security and U.S./Russia relations has relied on NewSTART treaty for this. The ratification of the NewSTART treaty by the U.S. Senate is so important that such incidents as last summer's Russian spy scandal and this week's extradition of Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout to the United States of America have had no ill effects on U.S./Russia relationships. 10 GOP senators and Arizona Republican senator Job Kyl are working to stop the vote until the Democrats lose six u.s. senate seats next year.
A brand new START for GOP
Starting back up on-the-ground inspections and stopping strategic nuclear missiles is really significant for the NewSTART treaty. The old START treaty expired in 2009 meaning this is even more important. Kyl and his new acolytes are saying the Senate needs to start over because more cash is needed for modernizing the arsenal that remains after the reductions. Ironically, that point was brought up earlier, and in response the administration added $4.1 billion for such a purpose. Some say that United States of America missile security options could be restricted because of the language used in the treaty.
What NewSTART actually states
The NewSTART treaty doesn’t talk concerning the number of missiles the U.S. can build. No limit was put in there. There is also no cutting requirement. United States of America existing systems can stay. In April, the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee was told that the NewSTART treaty will actually make the missile restraints currently there taken away. Military Security Agency chief General Patrick O’Reilly explained this. The U.S. can now test missiles that would be there to take out other missiles; which was limited in the old START treaty.
