The Prophet’s Tuesday Tapout up at Epic Carnival

My weekly run-down of the MMA week that was–aka “The Prophet’s Tuesday Tapout” is now up at the Epic Carnival blog. Read a recap of the major storylines coming out of UFC 76 with a heavy dose of smart assed commentary, plus gawk at a picture of UFC fan Jamie Pressley in a silver bikini by clicking here…

In the interest of full disclosure, note that while Jamie Pressley *was* in attendance at UFC 76 I won’t go so far as to say she “sizzled”. In fact, she was on-screen for less than a minute. Her presence does give me the excuse to use a picture of her instead of one of gnarly looking Keith Jardine bleeding out of six or seven different cuts on his head.

After a few relatively uneventful weeks in the MMA world where I’ve been struggling to find things to write about, all hell broke loose Saturday at UFC 76: Knockout. The card was pretty entertaining in its own right, but more importantly for someone who’s been called “the future of fightsport journalism” like myself it offered enough interesting storylines to keep me writing nonstop for the next week or two.

Powermad ATL cop arrests MickeyD’s worker who served him a bad burger…

When most normal human beings get a bad meal they ask for a replacement or a refund. If you’re one of those cops that thinks they’re above the law they’re purportedly charged with protecting, you throw the employee that served it to you in jail. That’s what Atlanta Barney Fife Wendell Adams did after he received an oversalted burger at McDonalds. Apparently the wage slave in question, Kendra Bull, accidentally put too much salt on the burger. She alerted a co-worker and her supervisor, both of whom chose to serve it anyway or, more likely, weren’t paying attention. Somehow the poor woman who oversalted the burger gets charged with “reckless conduct” and is now facing charges after spending a night in jail.

Of course the cop couldn’t have just asked for his money back, since he got the meal for free.

If receiving poorly prepared food at MickeyD’s is a crime then we’ll have to build a lot more prisons.

Investigators don’t know if Bull was targeting the officer with the Big N’Tasty blue-light special, only that she admitted putting the salt on the burger, said Officer George Louth, spokesman for the department.

“It is questionable whether she even knew it was for a police officer,” Louth said. “She knew it was not up to their standards and served it anyway.”

Bull, the mother of a 1-year-old child, had made several inconsistent statements, Louth said.

The burger made Adams so ill after a couple of bites that he vomited.

The department wants the GBI Crime Lab to analyze the rest of the hamburger to determine if something more toxic was added, Louth said.

While Bull perhaps didn’t know an officer was getting the burger, somebody at the restaurant had to know, so that the cash register wouldn’t record a full price on the discounted meal, Louth said.

“In the middle of the night the only people they discount for are their employees or a member of the Police Department,” Louth said.

The drama started early Friday when she said she accidently dumped too much salt on a burger she was preparing for herself. A co-worker tried to remove the salt, and Bull said she told a supervisor about the heavy dose of condiment.

The supervisor acknowledged the salt, she said, but still put the patty on the officer’s bun, Bull said. The supervisor denied Bull’s account when questioned by police.

Asked why someone would try and salvage the burger, Bull said she wasn’t sure.

“They’ve been saying we’ve been wasting too much meat,” she said.

Even more hilarious in a sad way than the cop arresting the MickeyD’s employee is that the department is going to spend taxpayer money to send the burger to the crime lab for further testing.

Nothing like a cop using his power to retaliate for getting a bad meal that he didn’t pay for in the first place…..

Beer and spirits writer Michael Jackson dies…

Via the Accidential Hedonist blog:

Michael Jackson has died–the *good* Michael Jackson who was one of the world’s foremost authorities and most prolific writers on beer and whiskey.

Top beer expert Michael Jackson died this morning.

Jackson dedicated more than three decades to the pursuit and documentation of the world’s finest beers, and wrote many books on the subject.

He became known as the most widely-published and influential author on beer. He developed a cult television series known as “The Beer Hunter”, and contributed articles to countless magazines and newspapers.

Jackson was especially well-known for his particular passion for the specialty brews of Belgium, and his bestseller The Great Beers of Belgium.

Morning Advertiser beer writer Roger Protz said: “I’m in Germany at a beer conference and when I announced he was dead people were totally shocked - he was just so well-known.

“He was the best - and always will be the best. His knowledge of beer is unsurpassable. His genius was to to be able to write simply and beautifully about beer.

The best thing I’ve read about Michael Vick…

Admist all of the pabulum making the media rounds today attempting to portray convicted dogfighting degenerate Michael Vick as a victim, the Las Vegas Review Journal’s Joe Hawk gets it right. Vick deserves whatever he gets and then some:

Pit bulls have never been my breed of choice, mind you. But I’ve read enough about them — and know enough about dogs in general — to understand they are not as mean as portrayed. In fact, like all dogs, they are gentle souls unless beaten into becoming vicious. They are faithful friends, always ready to please while asking for nothing more than food, water, a toy to play with and your legs to lie against when you sleep at night.

Dogs are God’s gift to mankind, I believe — although I’m sure the counterculture “cat people” will disagree. And I’m OK with that. To tweak an old saying, “Different pet strokes for different pet folks.”

But the “different strokes” mind-set of accepting dogfighting as sport cannot and must not be accepted in a civilized world. It is incomprehensibly sadistic. To that end, I implore the judge who takes Vick’s official plea on federal dogfighting charges Monday not to go by the recommended 12- to 18-month prison sentence reportedly pleaded out. Rather, I beg him to give this heartless individual — who once was quoted as saying that, next to football, “I love animals, I love fishing and I’m a mama’s boy” — the maximum of five years behind bars.

Take away Michael Vick’s life, if only for half a decade, as he took away the lives of creatures born to bring joy, not bred to do harm. Make him pay, if not by electrocution, if not by drowning, then with a seemingly interminable amount of time to think about what he did wrong.

Make him cry, your honor. Make him cry, just like those of us who have lost a dog have cried.

In most of our cases it happened the way it should — naturally, peacefully, because God probably needed a friend to play fetch with.

The genius and vision of John Edwards…

Via the essential REASON weblog. The entitle this post “Quote of the Year”. Can’t add much to this….

“I’m going to be honest with you—I don’t know a lot about Cuba’s healthcare system. Is it a government-run system?”
–former Sen. John Edwards
Backstory here. Edwards was asked in Oskaloosa, Iowa if the U.S. should adopt a Cuba-style health care system and that was his answer. ABC has a gotcha of sorts, noting that he’d previously told a frog-throated supporter that he’d watched Sicko. But he added that he didn’t get “all the way to the end,” and the end of the movie is the Cuban part. And really, how are you supposed to know that Cuba has state-run services until you’ve seen Sicko?

Fundy church allows child molester to serve as pastor..

Via the always enlightning Obscure Store and Reading Room

Never a dull moment with the fundamentalist types. This time they have no issue with a convicted sex offender fresh out of the “grey bar motel” serving as a pastor. Yet they get *really* worked up when a divorced pastor has the nerve to remarry.

A southwest suburban Southern Baptist congregation allowed a convicted child sex offender to preach for the last few years — despite his past, and a warning from his previous church that he might still be dangerous, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned.

In 1996, Jeff Hannah was sentenced to nine years in prison for having sexual relations with four underage girls — ages 15 to 17 — while a married youth minister at Crossroads Church in Libertyville.

Hannah was paroled in 2001 and joined the First Baptist Church of Romeoville, where his new wife was a member. Soon after, the pastor moved on, and church members — aware of Hannah’s crimes — asked him to step into the pulpit until a replacement was hired, according to church members, Hannah and others.

The story gets better as the cradle robbing “Man of God” blames his ex-wife and his role as a youth minister for his transgressions. How about taking a little responsibility yourself? Good thing they didn’t leave this nutjob in charge of the nursery….

In talking to the Sun-Times last week, Hannah, 42, was unapologetic about his crimes, saying his first marriage had been troubled and he’d had “urges.”

“I honestly believe that had I been a college pastor, I’d slept with college girls,” he said. “But I was a youth pastor. It was less about age and more about who I spent all my time with.”

The Rev. Steve Farish, pastor of Crossroads Church, which has relocated to Grayslake, said he considered Hannah so dangerous that he warned the Romeoville church and a regional Southern Baptist official.

Southern Baptists can apparently “forgive” a convicted sex offender, but don’t you try divorcing and re-marrying:

“We thought he could still potentially be a danger to women and children,” Farish said. “He was never repentant and never told the truth.”

Randie Bruno, the prosecutor in Hannah’s case said, “He has the charisma to fool everybody.”

But Hannah led the Romeoville church until February 2006, when the Rev. Charles Hamby, a 54-year-old divorced pastor with financial troubles, was hired. When Hamby remarried a few months later, several church members left, including Kirkpatrick.

“A pastor should be the husband of one wife,” Kirkpatrick said.

Hamby, who also knew of Hannah’s past, allowed him to continue as a preacher and gave him even greater leadership roles. “The man … paid his debt to society,” Hamby said.

Some in the congregation were upset by Hannah’s role, but Hamby’s remarriage was a bigger controversy, according to church officials. The feud bubbled over last week, when Hamby and Hannah abruptly resigned.

Congressman plays ‘do you know who I am’ card, gets arrested

It ain’t a Republican thing, it ain’t a Democrat thing–it’s a politician thing. Like Palmetto State Barney Fifes driving with an expired license for over a year, stoner cops who get baked off of “evidence” from drug busts, and countless Congressmen and Senators the overwhelming majority of politicians think they’re above the law. At some point not long after they’re sworn into office they rid themselves of the silly notion that they’re in Washington to serve their constituents and start believing that they live by a different set of rules than John Q. Public.

The most recent example is Florida Democrat Congressman Bob Filner. Filner got steamed after his bags didn’t arrive at Dulles Airport on time. Can’t blame him for that, as we’ve all been there. Unlike the rest of us, however, he plays the “do you know who I am” card and starts shoving airline employees around like he’s a tough guy. Unfortunately, the Airport cops let him walk and he would have gotten off scott free were it not for one of the employees he assaulted pressing charges against him. Here’s the account of the incident, complete with Filner’s variation of the “do you know who I am” card–the always fashionable “you can’t stop me”. He didn’t go so far as to say “I’m above the law” but that was clearly implied:

Rep. Bob Filner is facing an assault and battery charge after an incident at Dulles Airport where he allegedly pushed an United Airlines bag claim employee as first reported by ABC7/Newschannel 8.

ABC 7’s Jay Korff and Kris Van Cleave broke the story

Filner, a Democrat from California, allegedly attempted to enter an employees-only area on Sunday night.

Van Cleave spoke with several witnesses who said they heard Filner yell “You can’t stop me,” before pushing aside the employee and refusing to leave the office.

Apropos of a sleazy politician, Filner’s office tries to curry sympathy by involving “the troops” in the whole imbroglio:

“Congressman Bob Filner is on his way to Iraq, visiting our troops, and will have a full statement when he returns. Suffice it to say now, that the story that has appeared in the press is factually incorrect - and the charges are ridiculous,” the statement said.

Had any of us roughed up an airline employee we’d be spending the night in the “grey bar motel”. Not this Congress-critter, who displays the arrogance and sense of entitlement that you’d expect from an 8 term incumbant:

When airport police arrived Filner was waiting in the bag carousel area, Prebich said. Police interviewed him and witnesses and let him go. The incident occurred around 6 p.m.

The employee decided to press charges and appeared before a Loudoun County magistrate later that evening.

Filner was summoned to appear in Loudoun County General District Court on Oct. 2. Assault and battery is a Class 1 misdemeanor charge in Virginia.

Filner, an eight-term incumbent who chairs the Veterans Affairs Committee, has displayed flashes of temper in the past.

Hopefully like his fellow pugilistic Democrat Cynthia McKinney he’ll be out of office before long…note to Filner–if you think you’re such a tough guy be a man and do it in a ring or an octagon. Don’t try to act all badass in the airport baggage claim….
