How To Make A Bamboo Fountain Yourself
You should consider using a bamboo fountain to liven up your garden. This unique fountain hails from Japan where it was created by rice farmers as a way to scare deer away from the rice paddies. The name "deer chasers" was coined and is still used as another name for the bamboo fountain.
The bamboo fountain found a new use with the monks who used them to measure their meditation times. With more people aware of the environment, the bamboo fountain is garnering more notice since it is made of environmentally friendly material. Still, the bamboo fountain possesses a simple design and charm that attracts people. The typical bamboo fountain can be used inside the home and out in the garden.
Creating a bamboo fountain does not involve more than a few basic items. The parts for the fountains include bamboo, pipe, pump, base, screws, rod, and a container. If you are constructing an outdoor bamboo fountain, it is a good idea to use a quality bamboo that will not break under variable weather conditions. Apart from practical issues, if you intend the bamboo fountain for inside use, you might consider polishing the bamboo to make it more appealing and longer lasting. You will also need a screwdriver, wood saw, and a drill to make your bamboo fountain.
The first step after you have all the parts for your bamboo fountain is to cut the bamboo sticks to required lengths. Three large bamboo sticks are needed. One piece of bamboo will be used to hold the nozzle while the others will hold the moving part of the bamboo fountain. The moving part of the fountain is the required in your bamboo fountain since it is responsible for collecting the water and emptying it as the weight of the collected water increases. Then, you will have to drill a hole through the center of the two other bamboo sticks and the moving part. These holes will accommodate the rod that allows the fountain to pivot.
You will take the pipe and link it from your water pump and up the center of the bamboo stick. The top of the pipe is fitted with a bamboo nozzle. All parts of the bamboo fountain should be fitted to a base. You know that the bamboo fountain is functioning when the water coming from the nozzle continues running to the moving part of the fountain.
If you've read this and realize you don't want to create a bamboo fountain from the ground up, you can always buy an easy-to-install kit at a home and garden center.
If you do get a bamboo fountain, you might like to know how to maintain one. Maintenance focuses on two areas. The first is how you care for the water pump. Your pump must be kept submerged when running. It must be cleaned on a regular basis. Bamboo fountain care is also about replacing the water regularly. If your bamboo fountain is on all the time, you won't have to change it as often but it is still good to keep on a schedule to avoid smell, stagnant water.

could be easily drilled using a drill press, with say a 1/8" bit?
depending on the grade of the drill rod and the strength of your drilling equipment it's possible but the true meaning of the stuff is it is used for drilling not being drilled. hope this helps
