Types Of Screwdrivers - ToolsRUs

The mating tools used to turn the many different types and sizes of screws are called screwdrivers. Screwdrivers feature a basic design comprised of steel shaft fitted with a particular type of driver head and a handle with which to grip the tool. This extremely common tool comes in many sizes, in different lengths and with one of several types of driver heads designed to mate with a particular type of screw With it, you gain the mechanical advantage necessary to properly torque or apply rotational force to a machine element, screw or some other type of fastener. Screwdrivers come in manual, electric and battery-powered varieties.

In terms of drive head style and size, the heads or tips of screwdrivers are designed to mate with a particular type of screw. The shaft head is machined into a certain shape, becoming the male mate that matches with the female drive head of a fastener. The two most common screw heads are slotted and Philips head. Nearly flat with a squared-off tip, slotted driver heads resemble a paddle. The kinds of screws it can torque depends on the width and thickness of the tip. Philips head drivers feature equal-length, perpendicular slots that form a cross. At each of the four points of intersection, the inner corners are slightly rounded, forming four convex arcs.

Other common driver types feature the square-shaped Robertson head and the Frearson driver which is similar to a Philips head, but it is a smaller, perfect cross with one size to fit all screws. Specialty screwdrivers designed to work with other screws include mortorq, pozidriv and supadriv. Each of these drivers feature heads with very distinct shapes. When looked at head on, a mortorq driver resembles a pinwheel or fan, with four wing-shaped tips. Pozidriv drivers are identical to Philips head models but feature a second cross-like set of flanks rotated 45 degrees to the main cross. Supadriv drivers also resemble Philips head drivers, but they have squared inner corners, not rounded.

Driver heads may be magnetic to secure screws as they are being driven. The length of the shaft varies as well, with longer shafts used for hard-to-reach fasteners. Other common features include drivers with changeable heads, giving you the ability to quickly switch between flathead and Philips head drivers or between driver heads of different size.
