Create a carrier that has to contain a racing car and take it to different parts of Europe, and make it such that it is swift and extremely eye-catching. The transporter's conception is a story of pride, fervour, and practical sense. There was extreme rivalry going on between Mercedes Benz and the other German racing teams in the days preceding the First World War. However, when Mercedes cam out with the V12 driven W-154, it won 12 of the 17 events up to the war, and staked the number one slot. It was not until 1954 that Mercedes actually returned to Grand Prix racing, with a decision taken by the management in 1952.
To trumpet its comeback, Mercedes Benz decided to build a special truck to haul its all new W 196 racer, a car that was piloted by a famous Argentine ace racer. The transporter had to be fast, unique and clearly identifiable as a Mercedes production. It was also required to be swifter than any of the other similar vehicles of its type, and even faster than most vehicles that ply on the Western European highways.
To be one of the first to reach the racetracks meant that you got more time to rehearse and organize. It also meant that repairs in the plants could be done comfortably and the racer could be back at the tracks in time. From a technical viewpoint, the carrier had the best of what Mercedes could rally. The X-frame of the 300 S sedan got modified to give the transporter its frame, and the 3.0 liter, 6-cylinder engine of the 300 SL sports car's along with their four speed manual transmission , was installed under the hood. But the really eye-catching characteristic of the carrier was its remarkable body work. The steel panels that were used n it were mostly derived from other models that were in fashion in the time. Also, the majority of the interior finishing was improved versions of the ones in the 180 S, as were the doors and the windshield. The front axle was kept unnaturally far behind the single cab, which in turn was placed too low, but the result was that the look was one that was uniquely Mercedes. The truck could go faster than 100 mph, even when loaded fully with 6,600 pound's a speed that is considered to be fast even today.
The transporter hit the roads sometime in the middle of 1954 and was an immediate hit at the tracks in Europe and North America. In reality, the carrier was mostly more surrounded by fans than the racing cars that it was supposed to transport. When a Mercedes Benz 300 SLR, that had entered privately at the 1955 French 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, took the lives of 80 people in a crash, Mercedes Benz retracted from public racing totally. Before the year was over, the complete racing division was retired and this included the transporter as well.
Although plans were made to place the vehicle and its precious cargo in the company's museum, its weight proved too much for the building's floors and the idea, as well as the transporter itself, was scrapped. In the years following its termination, Mercedes Benz got such a huge number of requests that it decided to make a replica in 1993. With the help of an outside fabricator, and a handful of sketches and photographs, the vehicle was finally unveiled in 2000.
